How to use wax melts: a beginner's guide
New to wax melts? Here is everything you need to get started, from choosing a burner to changing your wax without the mess.

If you have never used wax melts before, they are one of the easiest ways to fragrance your home. There is no wick and no flame in the wax itself, just scented wax that you warm gently until it releases its fragrance.
What you need
- A wax burner. This can be a ceramic burner that uses a tealight, or an electric warmer.
- Unscented tealights, if your burner uses them. Scented tealights will compete with your melt.
- Your wax melts.
Step by step
- Place your burner on a flat, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and anything that could catch fire.
- Break off one or two pieces of wax and pop them in the dish on top. Do not add water.
- Light the tealight underneath, or switch your warmer on.
- Within a few minutes the wax will start to melt and the scent will begin to fill the room.
When the scent fades
The wax does not disappear as you use it, only the fragrance does. When you can no longer smell it, it is time for a change. While the wax is still warm and liquid, soak it up with a couple of cotton pads and wipe the dish. If it has already set, a gentle push at the edge will usually pop it out in one piece.
A few sensible rules
Never leave a lit burner unattended, keep it out of reach of children and pets, and always read the label that comes with your melts. Follow the instructions for your own burner too, as they do vary.
That is all there is to it. Pick a scent, pop it in and enjoy.
